According to a study conducted by ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) (---), Kalonji was found to be useful in the prevention of diabetes (---) by maintaining the gradients of serum insulin and serum glucose. As compared to the common drug for diabetes i.e. Metformin, black seed is equally efficient in improving glucose tolerance.

The administration of black cumin seed for one month to steptozotocin-induced diabetic rats displayed a significant reduction of fasting plasma glucose, serum MDA, interleukin-6, and immunoglobulin A, G and M, while substantial increment of endogenous anti oxidant enzymes.


Anti-lipidemic activity of N.sativa (Kalonji / Black Seed)




1g/day administration increased high density lipoprotein cholestrol (HDL-c) levels after 3 months while two and three grams per day of N.sativa seed significantly decreased serum levels of total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) as well as low-density lipoprotein cholestrol (LDL-c) and increased plasma HDL.


Anti-hypertensive activity of N.sativa (Black seed/Kalonji)



Researches show that patients who were allocated to receive 2 gram daily supplementation of black cumin for one year displayed a noticeable reduction in systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial BP, heart rate.


Neuro-protective Effects of N.sativa (Kalonji/Black seed)




Repeated administration of N.sativa in rats indicated that, there was an improvement in learning and recall status. In addition, flavonoids isolated (----) from black cumin have been shown to modulate critical neuronal signalling paths involved in the processes of memory and are likely to affect synaptic plasticity and long standing potentiating mechanisms.
