Indian society has addressed the cow as gow mata. The Churning of the Sea episode brings to light the story of the creation of the cow. Five divine Kamadhenus (wish cows), viz, Nanda, Subhadra, Surabhi, Sushila, Bahula emerged in the churning.

The milk of cows is considered to possess the essence or sap of all plants and Ghee is the essence of milk... When we consider Ghee we are in the company of superlatives. In India, Ghee has been so highly regarded for so many things, for so long. Ghee causes secretions and liquefaction in the dhatus-bodily tissues that dissolve wastes allowing the functional intelligence of the body-doshas to carry away toxins-(ama). The ingestion of Ghee is used in Panchakarma specifically to first penetrate into and then dissolve ama in the dhatus, allowing the wastes to be then carried to the intestinal tract and then expelled.

Qualities of Cow Ghee

Ø  It is traditionally considered, that the older Ghee, the better its healing qualities. 100-year-old Ghee is highly valued in India and fetches a very high price. Such Ghee was often kept in Temples in large vats and families often pass on aged Ghee to their next generation to be used as medicine.

Ø  Ghee is known as a substance that gives longevity. This is because it has opposite qualities (heavy, slow, oily, liquid, dense, soft), and thus pacifying effects, to the light, dry and rough qualities of Vata dosha.

Ø  Ghee has the quality of snigda, oiliness, and unctuousness. It is smooth, lubricated and nurturing. Ghee is thought to make the voice soft and melodious.

Ø  Ghee is Guru, heavy, It increases the qualities of Kapha and decreases Pitta and Vata.


Healing Properties of Ghee

In Ayurveda,

Ø  Ghee is known for the quality of Ropana- healing, and its effectiveness in facilitating recovery from wounds

Ø   Ghee is used to heal that ulcer inside the intestinal tract

Ø  It can be applied for broken bones and bruises

Ø  It is highly effective for all sorts of skin rashes

Ø  It is also used on burns of both fire and chemicals

Ø  Ghee increases the overall strength, luster and beauty of the sarira-the body

Ø   Ghee softens and strengthens, protects and nourishes.

 


Cow Ghee Various Uses Positive Good Health

1. For Body Massage-Abhyanga. Apply ghee all over the body -> Bypass the digestive system -> Allow the qualities of Ghee to penetrate directly into the deeper tissue -> Creates endorphins or peptides, which enhance the body’s immune system. Peptides are thought to be the vehicle that the mind and body use to communicate with each other, a literal chemistry of emotion. 

2. Ghee is used in Purvakarma, (early Panchakarma) where a small amount of Ghee is taken first thing in the morning by the practitioner to oleate the internal organs and “dissolves” the ama or toxic wastes in the tissues, allowing them to be carried to the digestive tract for elimination.

3. Ghee is used as a carrier or “yogavahi” for herbs and bhasmas because of its supreme penetrating qualities and thus ability to carry these substances deep into the dhatus or tissues.

4. One or two teaspoons first thing in the morning followed immediately with hot water will promptly produce a bowel movement. It will also warm the body quickly. Two spoonfuls of Ghee in warm (non-homogenized) milk before bedtime is soothing to the nerves and lubricates the intestines and facilitates a bowel movement in the morning.

5. Ghee has one of the highest flash points of all oils and is very difficult to burn. In India, it is said that food is incomplete without the use of Ghee.

6. Ghee is excellent for a gargle (gandush), to improve the health of the teeth and gums.

Cow ghee and Buffalo ghee Differences

In India, Ghee is made from both Cow and Buffalo milk. The Ghee of a Cow is in liquid form at body temperature. The Ghee of a Buffalo is still slightly solid. Buffalo milk and Ghee are considered more dulling-tamasic, while Cow milk and Ghee are considered more pure and purifying-sattvic.

 

Effect of ghee on digestion strength:

Ø  Usually, the substances that balance Pitta, It balances Pitta Dosha, increases digestion strength, does not help in Ama (altered digestion and metabolism condition).

Intake of herbal ghee is prescribed for those with

Ø  Chakshu Kama      – those desiring good eye sight

Ø  Kshata Ksheena     – with chest injured, For the old, children and weak

Ø  Those desirous of longevity, of strength, good complexion, voice, nourishment, progeny, tenderness, luster, immunity, memory, intelligence, power of digestion, wisdom,

Ø  Proper functioning of sense organs and those afflicted with injuries due to burns, by weapons, poisons and fire.

Cow ghee treatments for various health problems

Ø  Visha – toxic conditions

Ø  Unmada – insanity

Ø  Shosha – emaciation

Ø  Alakshmihara – it is auspicious.


Purana Ghrita (One year old cow ghee) useful in

Ø  Mada – intoxication

Ø  Apasmara – epilepsy

Ø  Moorcha – fainting

Ø  Shosha – emaciation

Ø  Unmada – schizophrenia, insanity

Ø  Gara – remnant poisons

Ø  Jwara – fever

Ø  Pain in the ear, head as well as female genital tract.


Ghee for sex:

Oral consumption of Ghee to relieve dryness:

Ø  For people suffering from extreme dry skin, dry voice and overall dryness of body, in seasons like winter, ghee along with milk helps to relieve dryness and induce unctuousness, very quickly. (Ashtanga. Hr. Su. 16/41)

Ø  Ghee was also used as a dietary ingredient in post-surgical care. (A. Hr. Su 29/36)

Use of ghee in fever:

Ø  Ghee intake helps to relieve burning sensation after relief from fever. (A. Hr. Chi. 1/59).

Ghee for newborn: 

Ø  2 – 5 drops of Ghee is advised to be given to newborn. (A. Hr. U. 1/9)

Ø  Ghee and milk are congenial to children by birth. (A. Hr. U. 2/31)

Ø  Ghee is advised for a lactating mother. It is believed to add nourishing qualities to the breast milk and to fortify milk with nourishing qualities (A. Hr. U 2/10)


Ghee for healthy eyes:

Ø  Ghee is used for a process called ‘Tarpana’. (Sharangdhara Samhita Uttarakhanda 13/1). Especially, Ghee processed with Triphala is used for this purpose.

Ø  Ghee along with triphala and honey is told as a remedy to improve eye health.

Ø  Ghee is used for application over eyes for strengthening of vision. (A Hr. Su. 24/16)

Ø  Ghee is used to wash eyes for soothing effect. (A. Hr. U 9/7)


Ghee for gargling in place of oil-pulling:/

Ø  Useful to heal oral ulcers and to relieve burning sensation. (Due to Pitta ).


Ghee washed with water: (Shata Dhouta grita)

Ø  In pregnant woman, used to apply around the umbilical area.

Ø  Ghee is used for application over wounds and burns to reduce the heat and calm Pitta.

Ø  Ghee is applied over lips to heal the seasonal cracked lips also useful for local application for heel cracks.


Ghee enema:

Ø  Herbal rectal suppositories are smeared with ghee before insertion into anal canal. 5/288

Ø  Enema of ghee is used to strengthen bones. (A. Hr. Su. 11/34)

Ø  As per Ayurveda, bone gets its nourishment from fat. By administering ghee through enema, Vata gets balanced, leading to proper nourishment of bone tissue. (Bone and Vata are connected). Hence, ghee enema is useful in cases like arthritis.


Ghee usage in herbal smoking

Ø  Ayurveda recommends Herbal smoking one of the daily routine. Ghee is extensively used as an ingredient in Ayurveda herbal smoking procedure. (A.Hr. Su. 21/15)



Ghee for wounds, bleeding and burning sensation:

Ø  In leech therapy, ghee is applied over the concern area to reduce the burning sensation. (A Hr. Su 26/41)

Ø  Ghee is advised for application over bleeding wounds for cooling and quick wound healing effect. (A Hr. Su. 28/25)

Ø  As base to prepare wicks that were used for local application after surgical procedures. (A. Hr. Su. 29/27)

Ø  Ghee was used to apply over the surgical suture for quick healing. (A. Hr. Su 29/54)

Ø  In fistula and piles using a special preparation called Kshara, ghee is applied after the procedure to relieve burning sensation and irritation. (A. Hr. Su. 30/31)

Ø  Ghee is an excellent wound healing agent, when it is applied locally. (A. Hr. Su. 30/34)

Ø  In children, while doing ear lobe puncturing, ghee is applied first, to reduce pain & irritation and to ease piercing. (A. Hr. U. 1/31)


Psychological benefits of ghee:

Ø  It is best suited for those desiring intellect, memory and intelligence.  (A. Hr. Su. 16/8)

Ø  Ghee is mixed with mustard and neem leaves and used for fumigation. This helps to ward off evil forces. (A. Hr. U 3/48)

Ø  The term ojas is used to represent immunity. Ghee is one of the essential dietary ingredients to improve Ojas.

Use of Ghee in Spiritual Purposes; Spiritual benefits of ghee

Ø  Cow Ghee is used in lamps in temples and pujas all over India. It is said that the light of a Ghee lamp is more beautiful and ward off negativity and evil influence.

Ø  The great theme of the Vedas is yagya (sacrifice) and ghee is the essential offering to Agni (fire) in all yagyas. Agni is the mouth of the Gods and through offerings made to Agni, ghee is the food that feeds them.

Ø  The God Agni, the first word and deity of the Rig Veda is known as Hutabhu (the devourer of ghee). The association of ghee with light and brilliance is found in many passages of the Vedas.

Ø  The ingestion of ghee is offering the finest of fuels into the fires of digestion (Agni). Ghee increases the sattvic qualities of life both in our self and in our environment (the Gods are the elemental rulers of the cosmos). It allows body and mind, both subtle and gross, to burn with a refined brilliance.

Ø  Ghee increases Dhi (intelligence) refines the Buddhi (intellect) and improves the Smrti (memory).

Ø  Ghee increases ojas, which is the underlying basis of all immunity and the essence of all bodily tissues.

Ø   The Ayurvedic texts talk of four Substances for Snehana (the application of oily substances on the body): They are Taila (Oil,) Vasa (animal Fat), Majja (bone marrow) and Ghrita (ghee). Of these, Ghrita (ghee) is considered superior.

Ø  Ghee is sprinkled over the food, symbolizing that ghee purifies the food. This practice is known as “Abhighara”

Ghee home remedies: 

Ø  Having a teaspoon of ghee before food in the morning relieves pain in the bladder region (A. Hr. Su.  4/6)

Ø  In chronic fever, garlic along with ghee is advised as diet.  (A. Hr. Chi 1/55)

Ø  To relieve dryness of palate and oral cavity, Amla powder and raisins are mixed with ghee and kept inside mouth for a few minutes. (Bhava Prakasha Madhyama Khanda)

Ø  Triphala decoction added with ghee and sugar is useful in the treatment of anemia. (improves liver function)  BR 12/5-



Usage of Ghee during pregnancy:

Ø  In a pregnant lady, soon after beginning of labor pain, the lady is given oil massage and hot water bath. After this, lady is given a gruel along with ghee. – Bhavaprakasha 3/344

Ø  As per Yoga Ratnakara text book, ghee is one among the diet substances that the pregnant can take on daily basis. (Reference: Yoga Ratnakara Ksheeradosha Chikitsa)

Ø  Especially, during the first 12 days of pregnancy, ghee obtained from milk should be consumed by the pregnant mother.

Ø  In the third month, milk, ghee and honey are to be administered to the pregnant. (caraka saṃhitā śārīra sthāna 8/32)

Ø  In the fifth month of pregnancy, milk and ghee should be administered. (ca. sa .śār 8/32)

Ø  In the sixth month, milk and ghee processed with sweet herbs should be administered.

Ø  In seventh month, ghee can be processed with wild yam etc herbs and administered. (suśruta saṃhitā śārīra sthāna 10/4)

Ø  In eighth month, milk and ghee should be given to drink.


How to consume ghee

Ø  Half a teaspoon of ghee during morning or as part of breakfast

Ø  While taking food, first ghee with hard food stuff should be consumed, followed by soft foods and in the end curds.

Ø  Usually after ghee consumption, it is good to have a warm beverage.



Ghee as nasal drops treatment uses

Ø  White hairs, hair fall migraine, tension headache, Trigeminal neuralgia, tinnitis, hearing problems, vision problems.

Ø  Lack of memory and concentration.

Ø  The nasal drops therapy with ghee can be continued for about 2 – 6 weeks time.

Ghee to use for nasal drops

Ø  Maha Kalyanaka Ghrita, Panchagavya Ghrita etc are used.



Ghee Side effects and Contra indication:

Ø  Ghee is best avoided during jaundice, hepatitis; fatty liver changes. Excess of ghee can cause indigestion and diarrhea.

Ø  Consuming ghee while having cold, cough may worsen the condition in a few
during fever and During Ama.


Management of Ghee over Intake (excessive usage):

Ø  If over-consumed ghee, do not take food till the ghee is completely digested.

Ø  Triphala, Trikatu – are used to cleanse the channels and improve digestion strength.


Scientific evidence - Actions of ghee

   Ghee Acts as brain tonic

¢  Ghee is good for the nerves and brain. It contains high levels of Omega-6 fatty acids and Omega-3 fatty acids, which is ideal for overall health. Apart from this, decreased intake of these acids is associated with increased risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s.

¢  Although ghee is high in saturated fats, , it generates less free radicals when heated, It is also rich in antioxidants that in turn protect  from free radical damage.

¢  It also improves memory and vision power, naturally ghee can only cross the Blood Brain Briar (BBB) in the brain and it can act like vehicle to the drugs and leaves in the brain acts as brain tonic.

¢  As ghee has powerful antiviral and antifungal properties, it Strenghtens the immune system.

¢  It is rich in saturated fat and eating too much can increase  Cholesterol levels, affecting the heart,

¢  Shelf life of ghee is also dependent on the method of preparation. The storing quality of desi ghee is better than that of direct cream or creamery butter ghee because of the presence of phospholipids.

¢  Milk fat contains over 400 individual fatty acids and their isomers. Cow milk contains large amounts of saturated fatty acids (SFA), particularly C14:0 and C16:0, and small amounts of mono unsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), poly unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and omega-3 fatty acids with beneficial effects on human health.

¢  The biosynthesis of LCPUFAs such as docosahexenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (AA) takes place by desaturation and elongation of precursors such as α- linolenic acid (ALA, 18:3n-3) and linoleic acid (LA, 18:2n-6), respectively.

Cow Ghee Effectiveness Animal studies Findings

¢  Ghee contains conjugated linoleic acid which has been shown to decrease serum LDL and atherogenesis in a rabbit model.

¢  Serum oleic acid levels that increased when the animals were fed ghee-supplemented diets may enable LDL to resist oxidation.

¢  Dietary ghee did not affect the 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG CoA) reductase activity in liver microsomes, indicating that it did not affect cholesterol biosynthesis, but significantly increased the excretion of bile constituents and lowered serum cholesterol levels.

¢  A study on Wistar rats fed native and oxidized ghee showed that  there was a significant decrease in the secretion of leukotrienes B4 (LTB4), C4 (LTC4), and D4 (LTD 4) by peritoneal macrophages activated with calcium ionophore.

¢  Liver is the primary site for the biosynthesis of cholesterol, which is regulated by HMG CoA reductase. This enzyme is down regulated by cholesterol levels in the diet and is also inhibited by oxysterols. Even though the heated ghee contained cholesterol oxides, it did not affect HMG CoA reductase activity.


Clinical studies on Ayurvedic medicated Ghee Shows

¢  A preliminary clinical study on the effect of medicated ghee on serum lipid levels in psoriasis patients demonstrated hypolipidemic effects of ghee when given at high doses.

¢  The patients were given daily incremental doses of 60 ml medicated ghee over a 7-day period. The patients experienced a significant reduction in scaling, erythema, pruritis, and itching, and a marked improvement in the overall appearance of the skin.

¢  The effectiveness of medicated ghee in the treatment of psoriasis may be due in part to ghee's ability to lower prostaglandin levels and decrease secretion of leukotrienes, which are inflammatory mediators derived from the arachidonic acid cascade. Arachidonic acid is an essential fatty acid present in the phospholipids of cell membranes.

¢   Arachidonic acid is cleaved from phospholipids by the enzyme phospholipase A2, and then serves as a substrate for the production of pro inflammatory lipid mediators known as prostanoids and leukotrienes. Prostanoids include prostaglandins and thromboxanes and are synthesized from arachidonic acid by cyclooxygenase enzymes.

¢   Leukotrienes are synthesized from arachidonic acid by lipoxygenase enzymes.

¢  The secretion of large amounts of leukotrienes such as LTB4, LTC4, and LTD4 is seen in patients with psoriasis and asthma, and suppression of leukotriene formation is used in the treatment of these disorders.

¢  Due to the PUFA content, the cholesterol esters become oxidized and are then incorporated into LDL and transferred to endothelial cells where they cause damage that induces structural changes, ultimately resulting in the lipid peroxidation processes.

¢   Ghee contains antioxidants, including vitamin E, vitamin A, and carotenoids, which may be helpful in preventing lipid peroxidation. Vitamin E is found in all cell membranes and functions aggressively in this lipid environment to quench free radicals and prevent the massive lipid peroxidation that results from a free radical chain reaction speeding along the membrane.

¢  The herbs in ghee-based Ayurvedic formulations have high concentrations of antioxidants which can prevent oxidation of LDL.

¢  A study on a rural population in Rajasthan, India, revealed a significantly lower prevalence of CAD in men who consumed higher amounts of ghee.

¢  Ghee has been heavily utilized in Ayurveda for thousands of years for its health-promoting properties. It is administered alone and is used in conjunction with herbs to treat various disorders. There are 55–60 types of medicated ghee described in the Ayurvedic texts.

¢  The herbal mixture MAK-4 inhibited the oxidation of LDL in hyperlipidemic patients. Mixtures containing ghee have also shown hepatoprotective effects, anticonvulsant activity, enhancement of memory, and enhancement of wound healing.
